About
Lisa Dispigno, international professional flautist, is an active freelancer who got her musical start both in London and New York. Both cities have shaped her artistry by affording her rich musical experiences and opportunities as a professional. Ms. Dispigno has traveled the world performing orchestrally, as a soloist, and in chamber music ensembles. Her musical expertise encompasses multiple genres: namely classical, world, and rock music. Her concerts have spanned across the US, UK, Europe, and Japan.
Ms. Dispigno was recently appointed an Altus Flutes Performing Artist.
The New York Times praised Ms. Dispigno for her performances as principal flautist in Martina Arroyo's production of Mozart's The Magic Flute in New York City.
She has performed in many orchestras and ensembles with renowned conductors across the globe: mostly in the principal chair, and also as second flutist. Some of these ensembles include The Knoxville Symphony, London Conductors Orchestra, the Chelsea Symphony, One World Symphony, the Antara Ensemble, Dell'Arte Opera Ensemble, The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Allentown Symphony Orchestra. Selected conductors she's worked with include Valery Gergiev, Pierre Boulez, Kurt Masur, Fabio Luisi, Ludovic Morlot, David Gilbert, Benjamin Zander, Bobby McFerrin, Mariss Jansons, Gunther Schuller, Jerzy Semkow, JoAnn Faletta, and Gerard Schwartz.
Lisa is equally at home in an orchestra chair, or performing as a soloist. Whether performing classical, glam rock, world music, or recording in studio sessions for bands, films, and television shows, Lisa embraces combining genres. While most of her focus is classical, Lisa adeptly works with crossover genres. She relishes the chance to work with multi-genre artists, and has performed with The Irish Tenors and Andrew Wyatt (of Miike Snow), among many others. Her performances have been featured on Radio Television Ireland, in Hollywood recordings, composer/pianist/flutist/saxophonist Chris Torkewitz's recent album release, NY Ensembles, the bands Snowmine and The Orion Project, jazz trumpeter Shareef Clayton's solo album, and in the PBS documentary 18 Voices Sing Kol Nidre. Her ability to effortlessly cross over genres has afforded her several years performing and collaborating with dancers, circus artists, and rock musicians in New York. Her love for the performing arts spans a vast spectrum of variety, and she loves blending art forms by collaborating with other artists and dancers. Lisa has been solo flautist and a lead vocalist for one of New York's pioneering underground glam rock groups, This Ambitious Orchestra. Ms. Dispigno has also filmed several scenes for the Amazon series, Mozart in the Jungle (Season 4). She has appeared as guest soloist with Curtis Eller's band American Circus, both in New York City and London, and with the Flying Penguins in Glasgow, Scotland.
Currently, Lisa has been focusing on works of specific composers: namely Handel, J.S. Bach, and Schubert.
Ms. Dispigno trained at three of the world's top music conservatoires: Royal Academy of Music in London (UK), Manhattan School of Music in New York, NY, and the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Lisa has had the great fortune of studying with some of the world's top orchestral and solo flautists - namely William Bennett, Fenwick Smith, Jaime Martin, Harold Jones, Pamela Vliek, Linda Chesis, and Keith Bragg. Lisa holds a Bachelors of Music in Flute Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and a Masters of Music in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory of Music, graduating from both institutions at the top of her class and excelling in the orchestral programmes throughout her studies. She participated in undergraduate and auxiliary studies at London's oldest music conservatoire, The Royal Academy of Music, at which she formed her 'musical backbone'.
Lisa has been a sought-after private instructor for the past 2 decades, holding successful flute studios in London, UK, and in the US: in Boston, NYC, and Long Island, New York.
In her spare time, Lisa has devoted much of her time to studying and practicing various different movement arts. Skills she has learned in a multitude of movement modalities afford her awareness of concepts related to breathing, posture, and musicality, enriching both her performing life as well as her teaching. Yoga, Pilates, and most recently Qi Gong are important practices in her day to day life. Principles in movement extend to much of what we practice in music, and by carrying these concepts over to music, she believes performers can improve their health, longevity, and performing skills. Ms. Dispigno utilises her own practice and knowledge of yoga, Pilates, and movement principles to help aide her students' postures and breathing techniques. She is excited to be participating in an upcoming certification course for Pilates.
Lisa is also an advocate and a robust voice for the awareness of the great need for reduction of plastic waste polluting our planet and ecosystem.
"Lisa Dispigno, a flutist, played [her] important instrumental role with excellence."
